Meet Nikki,
home baker with a passion for pastries and beads made from scratch. I teach pastry and bread baking workshops, and develop recipes focused on alpine baking traditions.
Originally from Munich, Germany, I now live in Northern Virginia, still deeply rooted in the Southern German tradition of alpine pastry art and bread baking. In the early 1900s, my family owned a bakery and pastry shop in one of Munich’s working class neighborhoods. In the 1920s, my great-grandparents moved just outside of Munich where they opened a grocery store. My grandparents took over and served their neighborhood until the early 1960s like a typical corner store.
Until my grandfather died in the mid 1990s, he lived in a house behind the store surrounded by a large garden where he grew vegetables and tended to an orchard of apple and plum trees. Throughout my childhood and teenage years, we would climb into the trees to pick buckets full of apples and plums that my mother would turn into delicious tarts.
After I moved overseas, I not only re-discovered many of the alpine pastries as a way preserve memories from back home, it also created opportunities to connect with people at my new home by sharing the passion of baking with others. I believe that our lives’ stories are best shared while we immerse our hands in flour with the warm scent of freshly baked goods connecting us to people and places we love.
